Wellington tech hub gains traction

A $3.2 million tech hub for Wellington could be up and running by July.

The council's economic growth and arts committee has voted to support opening the hub in the city, funding for which will be considered in the council's 10-year-plan deliberations.

Councillor Jo Coughlan says the hub will allow businesses in their early stages to use resources, and collaborate.

"But ultimately if they become more successful and they want to employ more people, they will need to be going out and taking space in more traditional office space potentially, so it's about growing the pie for Wellington."

Coughlan says the hub isn't just for those in the tech industry, other businesses and service providers could also set up there.

"It's a space which is a place for collaboration, it's a place to start a business with some resources available to you to help get you started, which you may not be able to find if you're trying to do it all by yourself."

It's hoped the Tech Hub on Tory Street will be up and running at the start of July.
