There are calls for better work safety for Wellington's parking wardens after one was sucker-punched on the job.

The officer required facial reconstructive surgery for broken bones after the attack on Friday.

Wellington City Councillors are condemning the daylight assault.

Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons says this just isn't good enough.

"It's really disappointing and upsetting to hear about this terrible assault, everyone should be safe at work and on our streets."

Fitzsimons says she will be backing more safety measures for these council workers.

"The council will be getting an incident report through our regular health and safety monitoring and I'm very keen to look at what that says about all the steps we should be taking to make sure that an assault like this doesn't happen again."
