Uniqueness lost in Wellington amalgamation proposal?

A call to merge nine lower North Island councils has got residents up in arms about losing their local identity.

The Local Government Commission last month recommended a supercity, taking in Wellington, Kapiti, Wairarapa, the Hutt Valley, Porirua.

Labour MP Grant Robertson set up a website, to help locals make submissions - and says it's clear how they feel.

"There is room for better co-ordination and co-operation among local government, but there are question marks about whether or not one council to cover such a big area would what people feel is a diversity of cultures means they're a bit cynical about the proposals."

Robertson launched a website last month for locals to have a say - and overwhelmingly, they're saying "no thanks".

"There's a lot of concern that with a large scale, super city type model people feel that they'll no longer have good access to their local representatives and decision making will end up further and further away."

You can make a proposal here.
