An ANZAC exhibition at Te Papa is proving a draw card for visitors to Wellington.

Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War has had nearly 48,000 visitors through, in its first three weeks.

Lead curator Kirstie Ross says while the popularity of the exhibition has tapered off since opening, people are still interested.

"We're already hearing that people booking to come to Wellington are also interested in staying longer to come to the Gallipoli exhibition."

Ross says to have tens of thousands of people visiting is beyond her wildest dreams.

"People are still queuing and whenever I go in to the exhibition there are lots and lots of people in there and they're reading the labels, reflecting and engaging with the exhibition."

Kirstie Ross says her colleagues reckon the exhibition is as popular as the Lord of the Rings one a few years ago.
