Prominent and highly regarded lawyer John Marshall QC died at his Wellington home this morning.
He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in this year's Queen's Birthday honours for his services to the law.
Mr Marshall had retired in March as chief commissioner of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission after a five-year term.
He was a former president of the Law Society.
The sixty-eight-year-old was diagnosed with a brain tumour 11 months ago.
He is survived by his wife Mary and their three children.
