Protestors are expected to take to the streets in Wellington today as the New Zealand Petroleum Conference gets underway.

More than 200 people are expected to join a non-violent blockade outside the annual summit at TSB Bank Arena.

Oil Free Wellington's James Barber says they're doing it to rally for climate justice.

"We want to get in there, we want to get in the way and disrupt it, so we can do something to address fossil fuel exploration in this country and do something about climate change."

He says they're not worried about any violence or arrests.

"We have a firm commitment to non-violence as part of our organising kopapa, so there will be no violence on the part of protestors."

However, PEPANZ Chief Executive Cameron Madgwick, who's organising the conference, says there will be consequences.

He says police will be there to make sure everything goes smoothly.

"It's important to ask of course that any such action is undertaken legally, and we fully support their right for freedom of speech but ask that they respect the law while doing that."

Madgwick says he hopes the blockade is mindful of the law.

"If the protestors engage in illegal activity, which would include physically blocking delegates from lawfully entering a facility, they should expect a lawful consequence."
