Last chance to have say on Wellington Super City

There will be one last chance for those affected by the proposed Wellington super city to have their say on the matter.

The deadline for written submissions on council amalgamation across the lower North Island is at 4pm.

The Local Government Commission is proposing nine councils across the region merge into one, though all but two disagree.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council and Kapiti Coast District Council have voiced support for the proposal.

Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy is encouraging people to make their views known.

"This is about making sure, regardless of what your position is, you have your say."

"If there will be changes it will be major, and it's about every citizen in our region making sure that their voice is heard."

Best Little Capital spokesman Michael Moughan admits public interest has been low.

"There hasn't been a lot of time to look at this issue given that the proposal came up near Christmas."

After the deadline, there will be a period for oral submissions, before the commission issues its final decision, which could then be open to a referendum.
