Hutt City Council's been slammed for using ratepayers' money to fight amalgamation.

There are reports council has spent nearly 47 thousand dollars to lobby, and more than $350,000 in total, in opposing one unitary council for the Wellington region.

Amalgamation supporter John Welch is appalled at how the money's been spent.

Mr Welch says it's shocking the council hasn't spent one cent on what the alternatives are, or to encourage debate on amalgamation.
