The Prime Minister is under no illusion that it's a close election campaign this year.

Bill English told Mike Hosking there is still more new policy to come between now and the election.

He said it was always going to be a relatively tight race, even before the change in Labour's leadership.

"And that's why we've been very focused on running an energetic, well organised campaign, and the change in Labour leadership doesn't alter that."
