Turnout in this year's General Election is up on the previous two.

The Electoral Commission says 78.8 percent of eligible people have voted, compared with 77.9 percent last time.

The Commission counted 2,179,668 votes last night, including 1,020,821 advance votes.

Another 384,000 special votes are yet to be counted, including 61,000 votes cast overseas.

The official result is due to be declared on October 7.
