Schools in the Bay of Plenty are being urged to put their calf days on hold to preserve the event for future generations.
It follows a call from the Bay of Plenty branch of Federated Farmers for all schools in the district to cancel the cattle sections of their shows.
Federated Farmers says it's up to local agriculture shows to gauge whether they're at risk of spreading M. bovis.
Dairy Chairperson Chris Lewis says there won't be a similar call made on a national level.
"We just encourage our local provinces and our local members to make decisions in every community, we don't want a top down approach."
He says it's up to locals to decide if their AG days pose a biosecurity threat.
"If the risk has been deemed to low, carry on, but if the risk is deemed to be high, maybe look at giving the land to dogs and whatever else for AG day."
As of now, there are no confirmed M. bovis cases in the entire Bay of Plenty regionÂ
