Northland's air ambulance service said a record number of callouts could be due to a combination of an increase in holiday makers and developing technology.

Northland Emergency Services Trust's emergency services team has responded to more than 400 requests for assistance in the last six months.

That is up by 20 on the same time last year and more than 100 five years ago.

General Manager Vanessa Furze said it is common for them to respond to more callouts over the busy summer period, but that summer activities seem to be becoming more dangerous over time.

"There's faster cars, faster bikes, faster boats so we tend to have more injuries."
