An environmental preservation group is gearing up to protect native bush it says is under threat from a quarry.

Lake Road Quarry is wanting to expand an open cast mine at Te Arai Point, north of Auckland, which will sit at the entrance to a proposed regional park.

The quarry was granted a Land Use Consent in 1981 for the extraction of two thousand cubic metres of aggregate, but the fresh proposal would see the extraction of 130-thousand cubic metres a year.

Lake Road Preservation Society Spokesperson Vince Moores said it's a concerning prospect for the land and local bird life.

"Six acres of native bush removed the entire hillside cut through which is just ridiculous, the area is designated as an area of significant natural beauty."

The 1981 Land Use Consent included an allowance of two truck movements per day.

Moores said the new proposal would see a significant increase in trucks in the area.

"The prospect of having up to a couple of hundred trucks a day on the roads which are choking the local vegetation and the residents with dust and of course the danger of these roads, there's been many people coming off the roads."
