Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby has mixed feelings after he side's 62-55 win over England in the Taini Jamison series opener in Porirua.
New Zealand led 29-28 at half-time but scored 20 goals in the final quarter to surge to victory.
She said, "the urgency and intensity really stepped up and there was also a calmness and a belief in the group which just felt like all of a sudden they connected and did what they were saying they were going to do. So, certainly have to look at the other three quarters and pick our effort up and our intensity up heading into the Napier test."
The second test is on Sunday.
