The West Indies are tumbling towards another heavy defeat, throwing away their wickets in the chase towards a massive victory target in the second cricket Test against New Zealand.

The tourists were 106-5 at lunch on day four at Hamilton's Seddon Park, still 338 runs shy of the 444 they have been set to win.

Roston Chase was 32 not out and Raymon Reifer unbeaten on nine.

They had started the day at 30-2, but the two batsmen touted as having the skills to grind it out threw away their wickets with loose shots in the morning session.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite was caught by Kane Williamson in the gully to give Trent Boult his 200th Test wicket.

Then Shai Hope (23), one ball after being struck on the forearm, hooked a Neil Wagner delivery to Colin de Grandhomme at deep backward square.

Sunil Ambris was also struck on the wrist by Wagner, which forced him to retire hurt on five.

His replacement Shane Dowrich then went for a second-ball duck, caught at short leg off another Wagner short ball.

Boult has taken some spectacular one-handed catches, but he dropped what should have been a standard caught and bowled two-handed effort off Reifer just before lunch.

Boult finished the morning with figures of 2-38, Wagner 2-27 and Tim Southee 1-39.

The West Indies won the toss and sent New Zealand into bat where they scored 373. The West Indies were dismissed for 221 and the Kiwis' second innings of 291-8 declared set the Windies a target which would be a world record if they achieved it.

New Zealand won the first match of the two-Test series by an innings and 67 runs in Wellington.
