Lydia Ko can break her long-running title drought overnight.

She has a share of the lead heading into the final round of the latest LPGA event in Indianapolis.

Ko said winning her first tournament since July 2016 would be special.

"I just have to stick to my own game, but obviously if I was the one holding the trophy at the end of tomorrow it would mean a lot."

Earlier, five consecutive birdies helped Ko move into the outright lead.

The kiwi golfer picked up shots from the 11th to her 15th holes as part of a eight-under second round.

She said after struggling for the past few months, it's nice to be in this position again.

"I've just enjoyed being in this position and being able to hit some good shots and give myself good looks for birdies and I think when you start doing that it just builds your confidence."

Ko had just the one blemish in a round that had nine birdies including five straight on her back nine.

"Well this morning to finish off with a bogey on the 17th hole I felt like I played the toughest hole out there - so sometimes you make mistakes but you just have to move on."

Chasing a first win in more than a year, Ko's cautiously pleased with her round.

"When you get into a good moment, that's when you kind of not focus on how many under par you're shooting and just go with the flow, and I think that really was happening in my back nine."
