The Hamilton rugby Sevens tournament kicked off today, with the sold-out crowd in party mode.
The stadium hosting the event has a new liquor management system in place this weekend, to monitor patrons' consumption.
The New Zealand leg of the Sevens tour is being held in the Waikato city for the first time after Wellington lost the right to host due to poor crowd numbers.
Event spokesperson Dallas Fisher said they have live data showing how much alcohol has been consumed on site, and a cash-less wristband system which shows how much individual patrons have consumed.
He said "there are two zones the stadium is divided in to, and each patron will wear a wristband which holds their purchase history.
"We also have a strategy where they start off serving full strength alcohol, then at some point in the day based on the data, it will move to only low strength products."
He said if one side is serving a little bit faster than the other, they can make the change to low alcohol products on one side, and leave the other side the same.
Police say they want everyone to have a good time, drink in moderation, don't take drugs, and look after their friends.
They said it will be a long weekend for event goers, and people need to moderate their alcohol intake.
