One of Indonesian football's most iconic players has died on the pitch following a collision with a teammate in a league match.

Goalkeeper Choirul Huda died after he collided with a teammate on the pitch.

The 38-year-old, who played for Persela Lamongan, collided with his defender Ramon Rodrigues and an opponent as he came off his line to challenge for the ball during a game against Semen Padang.

He was rushed to hospital where he died.

A statement from a doctor at the Dr Soegiri Lamongan Hospital, which was posted on the official Persela website, said Huda had suffered a "traumatic collision" which stopped his breathing and led to cardiac arrest.

The report said initial analysis revealed the impact was to the chest and lower jaw, resulting in the "possibility of chest trauma, head trauma and neck trauma".

Huda played for Persela since 1999, making more than 500 appearances and the club described him as "the Real Legend of Persela" in a tribute on Twitter.
