Former New Zealand Breakers import Akil Mitchell has picked up an NBA deal with the Brooklyn Nets franchise.

Mitchell, a 25-year-old forward, produced the goods in his sole Australian NBL season until suffering a nasty eye injury in January.

His left eye popped out of its socket after a mid-game collision against Cairns, causing some to fear his basketball career was over.

He played no further games for the Breakers as they missed the 2016-17 ANBL playoffs, but has recovered well enough to earn an NBA deal.

The Nets finished last in their Eastern Conference last season.

"Everyone at the club is delighted Akil has secured an NBA-level opportunity, a dream chance to prove himself in the toughest competition in the world, and we're proud we've been able to help," Breakers manager Dillon Boucher said.

"Akil was a fantastic Breaker and is much loved by the entire club."

During his single campaign in the black singlet, Mitchell played 25 ANBL games, averaging almost 10 points and seven rebounds per game.
