An Australian runner has won this morning's Auckland marathon, and an Aucklander is second.

Matt Davy from Victoria crossed the finish line at Victoria Park in a time of 2 hours 24 minutes.

Lead car commentator Hamish Meachem said Josh Maisey from Auckland was behind by over two minutes at halfway but closed the gap to finish just seven seconds behind Matt Davy.

"In the final couple hundred metres it was down to within a second or so, so the two of them had a fantastic sprint finish with the Aussie holding off the Kiwi for the victory."

Canadian Blair McWhirter came third in the marathon.

Hannah Oldroyd won the women's marathon with Leah Fitzgerald finished second.

Fourteen thousand runners took place in the event, which includes the marathon, half-marathon and runs of 12 and 5ks, as well as a 2.2k kids marathon.

The first athletes set off from Devonport at 6am with cool conditions and an overcast sky combined to produce perfect conditions for the race.
