Tim Southee returns to face the West Indies in Hamilton in the only change to the New Zealand squad who dominated the first Test in Wellington.

There is no room for experienced wicketkeeper BJ Watling, who misses out again with a hip injury, meaning Tom Blundell will play his second Test.

Watling has been in good form with the bat at domestic level but is yet to don the wicketkeeping gloves this summer.

A New Zealand Cricket statement says he is "still working towards full fitness".

Blundell made a memorable debut in the innings and 67 runs win at the Basin Reserve, becoming the first New Zealand 'keeper to score a century on debut.

Captain Kane Williamson described Blundell as brilliant in his debut.

"Your first Test there's always a little bit of pressure, a few nerves. But to then to take the game that much further ... and then picking up the run-rate, batting with the lower order batters they're all great experiences," he said.

Southee, who replaces George Worker in the squad, missed the first Test following the birth of his first child.

Worker and pace bowler Lockie Ferguson were both released from the squad to play domestic one-day matches on Wednesday, although Ferguson will rejoin the Black Caps immediately after the match.

The second Test starts at Hamilton's Seddon Park on Saturday.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Tom Blundell (wk), Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson.
