A base has been officially selected for the America's Cup in Auckland.Â
Auckland Councillors have voted for their preferred option of a cluster formation in the Wynyard Basin.
Councillors voted 19 to 1 for the option, after ruling out the Halsey Wharf extension.
That's after Team New Zealand board member Sir Stephen Tindall agreed the Halsey Wharf extension would be too difficult and cost too much.

"If we look at the Halsey extension, that absolutely does encroach on the harbour. That's why we're prepared to be flexible and look at the new cluster model."
Team New Zealand and the council are now in agreement, preferring the Wynyard Basin clustered option, with three nearby team sites.
Mayor Phil Goff has thanked Team New Zealand for not pursuing Halsey Wharf.

"They want to try to get as many New Zealanders as possible behind the race as they can and they've said 'Ok, we're prepared to drop that option and to go for the option focused on the Wynyard basin."
Council will still need to sign off on the plans next month after meetings with the Government on costings.Â
RNZ reports that planning consent for the project will be sought next year.
The three sites are expected to take 10 months to construct.
