ACT party leader David Seymour thinks New Zealand is falling behind in enacting laws allowing voluntary assisted dying.
It follows the Australian state of Victoria's lower house passing the Labour government's voluntary euthanasia bill yesterday.
Mr Seymour said there are differences in his euthanasia bill and that of the Victorian Government.
He understands the Australian bill is only for terminal illnesses.
Mr Seymour said his bill also allows people who are very ill and have an irremediable condition leading to grievous suffering to take advantage of choice too.
For instance, he explained, somebody with later stage Huntington's disease.
He thinks it shows that New Zealand is falling behind and neglecting people who suffer here, who should have a choice.
