Whanau Ora staying put despite call for inquiry

The Minister responsible for Whanau Ora is confident the government will stick with the project.

Labour's demanding an inquiry, and an urgent debate was held in Parliament yesterday, after a damning report from the Auditor-General.

The report that found that nearly a third of the $137 million of Whanau Ora funding ended up being spent on administration. The report also claimed it's not easy to describe what Whanau Ora is for or what it has achieved.

Te Ururoa Flavell says it's good to get the problems out in the open, and he's sure they can be fixed.

"I'm not worried at all about the government pulling the plug except if we don't deliver, but we are delivering. Therefore I don't have any worries."

Yesterday, Labour Leader Andrew Little said a thorough investigation of Whanau Ora providers should be a high priority given the Auditor General's findings.

"[The report has] drawn the conclusion that up to $42 million has been ill-directed or ill-spent," Little said. "I think we need to know exactly what that means. What is poorly spent - what has it been poorly spent on?"
