Waitangi Day political events could be scrapped from Te Tii Marae

A deal's been reached that could eliminate the traditional tensions around VIP attendances at Te Tii Marae for Waitangi commemorations.

An announcement's set to be made today that'll see all future VIP and political events events held at the upper marae at Waitangi, Te Whare Runanga - meaning Te Tii will no longer be used for such events.

Demonstrations on Te Tii Marae have delayed and disrupted ceremonies in recent years, and this year Prime Minister Bill English decided to stay away after confusion about whether he would be allowed to speak.

Waitangi National Trust Chair, and New Zealand First MP, Pita Paraone said the change should defuse most of the issues normally associated with the political aspects of Waitangi commemorations.

"You won't see the same level of behaviour that you've seen in previous years. For instance, whoever's invited, whether they speak Maori or not, they can still speak if they want."

Mr Paraone said he's meeting with fellow trustees today to tell them face-to-face of the plans.

He said there's been support from around the north that the change should be made.

Though the decision to scrap Waitangi Day welcoming ceremonies at Te Tii Marae has not been finalised.

Ngapuhi elder Kingi Taurua said the iwi hasn't been consulted over the proposal, and Mr Paraone is out of line.

"Pita Parone has no right to make this decision without consulting the tribe. This issue has nothing to do with Pita Parone, alone."

Mr Taurua said he'll raise his concerns when the trustees of the marae meet this morning.
