Maori Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan has quit the party and called on its leaders to do the same.

It was time for a new generation to lead the party, he said announcing his resignation in a newsletter for members.

"Both co-leaders Marama (Fox) and Te Ururoa (Flavell) should stand down and allow fresh talent to step up and lead," he said.

The call was not to diminish their record of achievement.

"Their contribution in securing major political gains for Maori is undeniable and is a source of immense pride for our party," he said.

Mr Flavell indicated after losing his electorate in the September election, ending of the party's 12 years in parliament, that he would quit once another co-leader was found.

Kaitaia doctor Lance O'Sullivan has been touted as possible co-leader joining Ms Fox, who has indicated a desire to stay on.
