Over one thousand people are marching for women's rights in Auckland this morning, and against new American president Donald Trump.

The demonstration began outside the United States consulate on Customs Street before advancing down Queen Street holding placards and chanting slogans.

The action is part of the Women's March Global movement, in which million people have so far committed to take part in 616 marches planned for January 21st across 58 countries.

Originating in the US in response to an increase in populist politics across the globe, the marches aim to defend democracy by supporting religious freedom and rights for women, immigrants, and the environment among other values.

Protests are also taking place in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
