The ACT Party leader is down, but not out, when it comes to getting three strikes legislation for burglary offences.
David Seymour’s attempts to table a Members' Bill on the issue were blocked in Parliament yesterday. The legislation would impose a three year mandatory jail term on people convicted of a third burglary offence.
Mr Seymour said the outcome is not entirely unexpected, but he still thinks the issue needs to be on the agenda.
“Burglary is not just taking people’s stuff,” he said.
“It’s a sense of violation and it’s also an entry level crime for people who start entering houses and committing more serious crimes.”
Mr Seymour will take solace in the fact that the Prime Minister isn’t ruling out backing such a move down the track.
“We’ve been supportive in the past on the three strikes legislation, so we just need to get the details,” said Mr Key.
