UPDATED 12.21PM: Ron Mark has been revealed as New Zealand First's new deputy leader - but the former Carterton mayor is keeping quiet on any talk of succeeding Winston Peters.Â
Mark, a former Army officer, officially took over from Tracey Martin at 10am this morning. The Party has thanked her for her contribution.Â
Â
The deputy is looking forward to working alongside leader Winston Peters - but won't elaborate on any talk of taking over from Winston after his tenure ends. Â
"We believe rural and provincial New Zealand's been neglected for far too long," Mark said. "I'm a rural and provincial New Zealander. I look forward to taking that battle up with Winston."
"I think any talk about succession, given the fact the Winston is yet to peak, is premature."
Peters himself is refusing to comment on the speculation either. When asked, he laughed and said "Nice try."
"I'd be happy with whatever decision caucus made. That's important. And whatever decision caucus made I'd back it."
