Updated 1:50pm: Amnesty International is raising its voice against the Government's foreign fighters legislation.

At select committee hearings on the Bill this morning, the human rights group criticised the Government for rushing the legislation through calling it a blow to the foundations of our constitutional arrangements.

Spokesperson Amanda Brydon says it's dangerous to rush through such measures without proper consultation, careful, thoughtful analysis is needed, not fast-tracking and grandstanding

And hard questions are being asked of the Government by a group representing the country's Muslim communities

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand has aired its views on the Government's foreign fighters legislation.

Association President, Dr Anwar Ghani asked where, in New Zealand's complete history of terrorism-like incidents, where is there any evidence that Muslims were involved?

He's criticised the government for rushing the legislation, and also for following US interests rather than an independent foreign policy.

Public has its say

Meanwhile, members of the public are having their say on the Government's controversial legislation targeting people who wan to be foreign fighters.

At select Committee hearings this morning, Bevan McCabe has been among those questioning the need for the anti-terror move.

"Let's face it. Ninety nine out of 100 foreign terrorists couldn't place us on a map."

And Kay Jones is worried innocent people could be caught out by passport cancellations if identity checks aren't done properly.

"There have been a lot of cases in the news where people have ben taken into custody, been put on no fly lists because their name has been mistaken for that of someone else."

Activist Valerie Morse has been tearing strips off politicians as she's voiced her contempt for the Government's foreign fighters legislation.

She's given MPs an ear-bashing while making a submission on the Bill this morning.

"This Bill is a vile assault clogged in fear and racism."

And Ms Morse has condemned Labour for supporting more powers for the SIS..

"In the very week the SIS has been shown to have colluded with the slime balls in the Prime Minister's Office to destroy you, you would even consider giving this agency more power."

The select committee hearing submissions on a new anti-terrorist laws has ditched one submitter because of the nature of their views.

Select Committee Chair, National MP Mark Mitchell says they've already thrown out one submission because of its anti-Muslim views.

He says they did have a submission yesterday that was regarded as bigoted and they decided very quickly not to hear it.
