Peters considering not bringing in another MP?

UPDATED 8.40am: Treading the road less travelled was the key to victory.

Winston Peters says New Zealand First's by-election bus went to places that had never seen a candidate before ... and they responded.

"There has never been a strong campaign of the type that we have mounted up here.

"You go to people and share with them economic and social facts. I'm not putting down anyone in the past, but we delivered a very focussed campaign."

The new MP for Northland is going to make sure National keeps its by-election promises - even if it didn't take the seat.

But Winston Peters told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking some of these promises, including the 10 upgraded bridges, simply can't be kept.

"One of them is an environmental award-winning bridge designed precisely for the forest in which it's going with two 500 year old kauri trees.

"That bridge should not be touched. It's only 20 years old."

Peters says another one isn't really a bridge, which shows how little research National put into it.

He also says there are actually 778 one way bridges in the electorate, not just the handful National's been talking about.

So will New Zealand First turn down the chance to pull in another MP after the Northland by-election victory?

Peters says the party's board will make the call before the final count that activates another list member coming in.

But he says there's a reason why the issue wasn't discussed before the result was known.

"We are going to consider that very seriously, but I didn't want any of the board, any of the members being detoured here."
