The Women’s Minister says a narrowing of the gender pay gap is a step in the right direction - but it's still not enough.

Latest official figures show the gap was 9.4 percent in the June 2017 quarter, down from 12 percent in 2016.

Paula Bennett thinks there's more work to do.

"Quite frankly, the gender pay gap should be zero," she said.

"There shouldn't be one at all. We need to continue seeing more women on boards, in senior leadership roles, wages going up, and more pay equity."
