Concern about succession and the road the Conservatives have gone down could prompt changes in the New Zealand First lineup next month.

New Zealand first leader Winston Peters is giving short shrift to media as he faces further questions about his deputy Tracey Martin.

It comes amidst speculation colleague Ron Mark's sought and got her job.

Peters confirms Martin is his deputy now, but is less forthcoming when asked if that will still be the case tomorrow.

"I don't know why you're asking questions like that."

And Peters has taken exception to being told he's failed to give answers on the matter.

"I didn't fail to answer your questions, I precisely told you why the questions would not be answered."

Peters has also dodged questions as to whether a formal announcement on the matter is being made tomorrow.

One of the party's former MPs, Andrew Williams, reports the party will be looking at who will ultimately be the leader.

Williams told Newstalk ZB that current deputy Tracey Martin is unlikely to succeed Winston Peters.

Andrew Williams claims she's not regarded as leader material, whereas four term parliamentarian Ron Mark, who is also a former mayor and a major in the army, is.

"I think many of the members who meet on the first and the second of August in Rotorua will realise that if they have a future for New Zealand First, a bit like the Conservatives, they have to have more than a one man pony act."
