No revoking of dual citizenship for terror threats

The Finance Minister says we potentially have the same sort of terror threats as Australia - but probably won't try and implement the same anti-terrorism measures.

The Australian Prime Minister's trying to pass legislation to strip Australian citizenship from dual-nationals deemed a terror threat.

Bill English said they probably wouldn't have enough support to pass something like it here.

"As the Prime Minister said this morning, I don't think we'd get a Parliamentary majority for that kind of measure, but the system will pay attention to people coming back from Syria."

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has argued that they are not the only western nation considering revoking the citizenship of dual nationals and other Australians linked to violent extremism.

Ms Bishop said the United States and Canada are also considering a crackdown on those who join terror groups or advocate extremism, while the UK had already taken action.

She said Australia has to take every step possible to keep the country safe, and to prevent foreign fighters taking part in bloody conflicts overseas.

Meanwhile Australia is about to appoint a dedicated frontbench position to combat Islamic radicalisation and liaise with Muslim leaders.

News Corp reports the post, to be announced within days, will aim to build better relations with at-risk communities and tackle the appeal of jihadist teaching.

The move is part of a raft of new counterterrorism measures, including yesterday's announcement of former ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty as Australia's first national counterterrorism co-ordinator.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott also appointed Justice Minister Michael Keenan as the nation's first counterterrorism minister.

He said Australia's national security architecture must constantly evolve to meet the threat from terrorism, amid growing concerns about the lure of groups such as Islamic State.
