UPDATED 10.45AM: Parliament's caterers will get guaranteed hours after their zero-hour contracts were ended.

Spotless Group, a company contracted to provide catering and cleaning services, has ended zero hour contracts for Parliamentary Service staff.

Labour leader Andrew Little raised the issue with Speaker David Carter yesterday.

The Service and Food Workers Union is welcoming the move, saying it shows Mr Little is a true advocate for workers’ rights.

Spotless Group will take immediate steps to ensure its employees have some guaranteed hours.

Jill Ovens, an industry leader with the Service and Food Workers Union, says it's great that Little has taken up the issue and shown real leadership.

"It shows that he is genuinely interested in the rights of workers and prepared to do something about zero-hours contracts."

Ovens is encouraged that the issue has been highlighted and something has been done about it, but she insists the campaign to get rid of the controversial contracts doesn't stop there.

"Hopefully they'll do that right throughout their operation and show other contractors that this is just not acceptable."

Andrew Little bumped into one of the affected workers last night.

"He was contacted late yesterday that his zero-hours contract was going to change, he would get secure hours" Little says.

"He didn't know why that had happened. When he found out he saw me, came up and shook my hand. So it was a very pleasing result all round."
