MP: Dog attacks not linked to ethnicity

Updated 12.46pm: A South Auckland MP has hit back at the idea dog attacks can be linked to the ethnicity of an animal's owners.

The SPCA's Bob Kerridge is under fire after blaming the way dogs are treated in some cultures for a spate of attacks.

He picked out Manukau, saying there aren't many responsible owners in the area.

But Mangere MP S'ua William Sio says attacks in South Auckland have more to do with dog-fighting rings and rural properties, than any particular ethnic group.

"Farms often have guard dogs, but when those dogs are loose and not fenced up they can also cause problems.

He says new migrants from all parts of the world need educating about New Zealand's culture of dog ownership and pet care.
