The Prime Minister says that mistakes were made when it came to the handling of sexual assault allegations at a Labour Party youth event, but their focus needs to be on supporting the young people involved.

Jacinda Ardern says Labour absolutely accepts mistakes have been made and from a range of different people.

Claims were made that four teens aged 16 to 18 were sexually harassed or assaulted by a 20-year-old man during a Young Labour camp near Waihi in February.

Since then, it's been confirmed the party's president, Nigel Haworth, and general secretary, Andrew Kirton, both knew of the incident within days.

Mr Kirton said he didn't tell police, the teens' parents or the Prime Minister about the incident because it was a matter of confidentiality and the teens' choice.

Ms Ardern said that she doesn't plan on sacking Mr Kirton.
