Representatives of local councils has passed several remits at the first day of Local Government New Zealand's AGM in Dunedin.

Some 97 percent of local government members called for communities to have a greater say on council reorganisation and the formation of council controlled organisations.

A remit calling for increased resourcing of community policing was supported by the same margin.

Some 93 percent of members wanted improved minimum standards for rental housing, and 96 percent backed legislation to crack down on rule-breaking freedom campers.

A majority of members supported the establishment of a Government earthquake strengthening fund, action on dust unsealed roads, and the relocation of Government services to regional centres.

Some 90 percent of councils supported a national-mandated beverage container system.
