Updated 7.46am: Input from social media will carry as much weight as any other public submission, in Auckland Council's new 10 year draft plan.
The proposals are now open for comment for the next seven weeks.
Mayor Len Brown says the Council has been too slow to adopt social media, but will make up for it now.
"One piece of feedback on twitter saying you bums up and no I'm not paying for any more of this and that's it, will be as significant as anyone coming in and giving us half an hour of their passion."
He says it's high time comments through channels such as Facebook and Twitter were recognised.
"And it always should have been, we sort of constrained it a bit, in our bureaucratic ways. We're getting over that and opening up Auckland to the full glory of pure democracy."
