Lawrence Yule puts hand up for Central Govt

It's the third time he's been asked, but Lawrence Yule says now is the right time to run for Central Government.

The current Hastings' Mayor has held the position for 15 years, and has been head of Local Government New Zealand for nine years.

He's now put his hand up for Tukituki, the electorate left vacant by the outgoing National MP Craig Foss.

Mr Yule said he didn't run the first time because he had a very young family, and the second time he was asked he was about to start his mayoral campaign.

"The third opportunity I've had is now and in my view, unless I take it, there will not be another opportunity. I support the board principles of the National Party and what they stand for.

Mr Yule said it's good timing.

"I've been the mayor here for just over 15 years. I've been the president of Local Government New Zealand for nine years. I have a very, I think, unique perspective on the difference between local and central government politics because of that. I actually think I can enter Parliament and make a difference.

"I've had lots of conversations with the National Party about this in recent days, but it's really been local National Party people, and actually other members of the public, who have said Lawrence, you've been great as a mayor we'd now like you to take those skills to Wellington as a member of Parliament."

Nominations for the seat, left vacant by outgoing MP Craig Foss, close on Monday.
