Controversial reforms set to pass

UPDATED 4.06PM: Controversial labour law changes are set to pass into law tonight.

The Employment Relations Amendment Bill is being debated in Parliament, for its final time.

It will remove tea breaks for some workers, and employers will no longer have to conclude collective bargaining.

Labour's Iain Lees-Galloway says the law change offers no benefits for Kiwi workers.

He says it won't lift wages or improve safety, but "simply makes more people more vulnerable".

Labour organises petition

Labour's talking up a petition against looming employment law changes even though it accepts it won't change the Government's position.

Acting Deputy Leader Annette King is lauding the fact 50 thousand people have signed a petition opposing changes the Government wants to make to workplace rules about tea-break entitlements.

But she says it won't change the Government's ideological stance.

Asked then what's the point in the petition, Ms King says it's about raising the issue to make sure they're aware of it.
