Labour is accusing MBIE of largesse over its new website, but is unable to say how much the project should cost.

The super ministry shelled out just under $560,000 for a new website covering all its operations and business

Labour MP David Clark said he hasn't had specific advice on how much a project like this should cost.

But he said people in the field have told him it looks like a pretty generous budget all round.

"I know that my own website costs are in the vicinity of $10,000 all up, and that a website that costs half a million dollars has got to be something pretty special."

However, the Minister is backing his ministry's spend.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce is confident the costs are significantly less than a number of other recent central and local government website builds.

He said it's significantly less than the cost of separately upgrading and maintaining the four websites of the previous agencies that make up MBIE.

Labour MP David Clark said it's further evidence of excessive spending by its Minister, Steven Joyce, on his pet project.

He said this gold plated spending shows how out of touch the National Government has become.
