Lawyer: Inmates can't vote because of 'electorate'

UPDATED 1.43pm: The Prime Minister's legal team are adamant Auckland prisoners couldn't have voted for him, and wouldn't have changed anything if they did.

Prisoner Arthur Taylor is spearheading the attempt to have John Key's electorate win ruled invalid.

A major part of Mr Key's defence is that most of those in prison are there against their will.

Lawyer Peter Kiely says a voter is only part of an electorate if they choose to base themselves there.

He adds that even if the votes were allowed, it wouldn't change the result.

There's around 8000 inmates in all of New Zealand, while Mr Key won by 14,000 votes.
