Both US Presidential candidates are against it, but our Prime Minister doesn't think the TPP trade deal is a goner.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have made it clear during their campaigns that the TPP won't be approved on their watch.

John Key acknowledges the deal is under pressure, but doesn't agree with sentiment that this means the TPP is dead.

"It's not unusual for politicians on the campaign trail to say one thing, and then for something quite different to happen."

John Key said there's still a chance the TPP may progress during the "lame duck period" - the period of time in between the US election in November, and a new President being sworn into office.

In New Zealand, Labour is opposed to the TPP, but have said they will not withdraw from the agreement once in government, if the deal is ratified while they remain in opposition.
