Former Prime Minister and National Party leader Jim Bolger has remembered his political foe Jim Anderton as a man who served his country well.
A former Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Anderton passed away overnight in Christchurch aged 79, after an illness.
Mr Bolger said that Mr Anderton displayed a lot of courage in leaving the Labour Party in 1989 and forming the Alliance Party.
He thinks his commitment to what he believed was right was one of his strongest characteristics.
"His memory will be of a man of principle, who stayed the course even when his Party, which he was passionate about from a very early age, had deviated - he stayed the course."
