UPDATED 5:33pm: There is to be an inquiry into allegations of GCSB interception of communications in the South Pacific.

The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwyn, will commence an inquiry into complaints over alleged interception of communications of New Zealanders working or travelling in the South Pacific by the GCSB.

The Greens are welcoming the inqury.

The accusation emerged after the most recent release of papers by former NSA contractor, Edward Snowden.

Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman says it's reassuring that an inquiry's being launched.

"We've got a lot of confidence in her work...remember, this is the inspector general that investigated some of the key complaints in Nicky Hager's book and, after a complaint from the Greens, she found those complaints to be true."

Labour Leader Andrew Little says there has been enough public anxiety about reports on the way GCSB's been conducting itself and it's right an investigation be carried out.

He also believe there needs to be clarity about what mass collection and full take is, and if the IGIS inquiry can assist with that then that would be helpful too.
