High milk prices cause a stink

UPDATED 3.18PM: Coca-cola is now more affordable than milk, and Labour MP David Shearer thinks that milk processors and retailers are to blame.

According to figures released by Statistics New Zealand, the average price of two litres of milk is now $3.45, compared with $3.19 two years ago.

This represents an 8 per cent rise in the price that New Zealander's pay for their milk.

In contrast, Shearer said that retail milk prices in Australia and Britain have dropped by 16 per cent in the past two years.

Australians now pay around NZ$2.47 for their milk, while in the UK milk retails for NZ$1.90.

The Labour MP wants the government to explain why milk prices are so high.

"What we should be doing is making sure that our milk is as cheap as it possibly can be, and I think there are people out there now who are profiting at the expense of New Zealand families," he said.

Shearer said that while the retail price of milk has risen, farmgate milk prices have dropped from 73c a litre in 2013/14 to 38c a litre in 2014/15, meaning that New Zealand dairy farmers are getting paid less.
