Gun users are applauding the Government's move to reject the majority of the gun law recommendations made by a select committee.
Yesterday, Police Minister Paula Bennett responded to the Law and Order Select Committee report, on issues relating to the illegal possession of firearms, particularly among criminals and gangs.
Bennett accepted seven of the 20 recommendations made by the committee, saying the right balance has not been struck between public safety and the rights of legal gun owners.

She shut down recommendations for a dealer's license to be required when selling ammunition and also squashed calls for new laws for military style semi-automatic weapons.
Director of Gun City David Tipple, said the Government's decision cracks down on gangs, not gun users.
"Paula Bennett has avoided bringing in unreasonable and ineffective controls on law-abiding citizens," he said.
Tipple said the Government did well to shut down extra recommendations, as "violent crime involving firearms is so small it's almost immeasurable".
"The balance has been struck. We've done so well it's time to move on to something else."Â
However the Police Association is outraged with Bennett's response.
Police Association President Chris Cahill, said Bennett has rejected every meaningful measure put forward to prevent the supply of firearms to criminals.
"I know the consequences: The consequences are going to be more firearms being stolen, more firearms in the hands of criminals and more people in New Zealand being shot."
