Greens stake claims in co-leader race

Positions are being set out as the Green Party's co-leadership candidates put their case to party members.

The four men seeking the job have fronted meetings with members in Nelson and Auckland this weekend.

Outgoing Green Party co-leader Russel Norman isn't playing favourites when it comes to his successor with an endorsement off the table

"No, I wouldn't give an endorsement, and nobody has approached me. I think I'll just leave it up to the members. They're perfectly capable of assessing the candidates and figuring out who the right person is."

MP Kevin Hague has a simple message.

"I am the candidate who has far and away the best skills, record of achievement and experience for this role."

But rival James Shaw believes he's got economic credibility with voters, and "the ability to appeal to the broadest possible coalition of voters to grow our vote at the next election, and the one after that."

The sole non-MP contesting the Green Party co-leadership is sticking to his guns over how he thinks the party should position itself politically.

Auckland-based party member Vernon Tava is at odds with his rivals for the job, and wants the Greens to move away from their solely left and Labour-aligned focus.

He believes that as long as they're seen as a left wing prop party to Labour, and stuck on the left, it will pose significant challenge to the party growing its vote.

"The whole point of the Green political project was to be beyond left and right. That's why it was established, that's a founding tenet. So if we really mean that, we need to be able to work with any government."
