The Green Party is pledging to fast track a light rail link from Auckland Airport to the city's CBD.

MP Julie Anne Genter said her party, if in Government, would take steps to see such a link in place in time for the 2021 America's Cup.

She said light rail to the airport is the most urgently needed transport project in Auckland, and it will start this year if they're in Government.

"Airport rail should be a project of national significance. I think that Aucklanders all agree it's well past time, we've got two major global events we are hosting in the city in 2021. I think this is bigger than one political party."

However the Transport Minister Simon Bridges said these sorts of projects take time.

"I think it's a bit rich coming from the Green Party given they have opposed all sort of Resource Management Act reforms we have ever tried to have."

Mr Bridges said fast tracking of a potential light rail corridor is already taking place.
